Professor Philippe de Wals (Quebec, Canada) describes an interesting experience in Quebec regarding the control of meningococcal disease. A region in the north of Quebec City experienced the spread of a virulent clone of neisseria meningitidis serogroup B and a prolonged outbreak took place. The specific clone was covered by the newly developed, just licenced, bexsero vaccine, which for this reason was introduced for the first time in the world to control the epidemy. All people between 2 months and 20 years of age were therefore vaccinated and after some months the number of cases dramatically decreased, thus demonstrating the efficacy of the vaccine.
