Daphne Holt introduces the CoMO (Confederation of Meningitis Organisations), of which she is Vice President, and speaks about meningitis in terms of causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
Meningitis is not exclusively a disease of childhood: the first peak occurs in infants under 5 and the second in adolescence, but there's a third peak of invasive pneumococcal disease after the age of 65 years. Therefore, it is essential that we consider vaccination throughout life, from infants, through adolescents, to adults and the elderly.
Even though the most of EU Countries don't have general recommendations for people over 65, it is extremely important to extend the vaccination to adults in order to diminish the potential carriers of meningitis and to slower the spread of the infection, especially if we consider the impact of antibiotic resistance on the possibility of treating bacterial meningitis.
