The advanteges of using probiotics in case of Helicobacter pylori infection is recognized. As professor Berni Canani points out, H pylori could drive the occurrence of a gastritis or other diseases at the stomach level; but selected probiotic strains, such as saccharomyces boulardii and lactobacillus rhamnosus gg, can improve the efficacy of the therapy with antibiotics and limit the adverse events induced by the antibiotic course.
Many other indications on the efficacy of probiotics in pediatric gastroenterology are emerging, but at the moment the level of the evidences is still low and more studies are needed.
In this regard, professor Berni Canani warns that the Western market of probiotics is completely out of control in terms of product quality, control and effective presence of the right strains themselves and he urges the need of an agency dedicated to control the quality and stability of the probiotics on the market.
