Prevention of acute otitis media is fundamental since the pathology has a great impact on the life of the child and their parents.
The most common preventive measures against recurrent acute otitis media are: reduction of risk factors (avoiding passive smoking, extending the period of breastfeeding,...), influenza vaccine, pneumococcal vaccine, antibiotic profilaxis and vitamin D. In recent years, a new role of alpha streptococcae in inhibiting the pathogenic streptococcae in children's oropharynx and nasopharynx opened new perspectives. Professor Marchisio talks about the positive effects of including a particular alpha streptococcus (Streptococcus salivarius 24 SMB) in a nasal spray for children with a history of acute otitis media.
