After giving an overview on tick-borne encephalitis epidemiology in Europe, professor Aukse Mickiene (Lithuania), underlines that the incidence rate of TBE is much higher in adults older than 50; moreover, both the severity of the disease and the severity of the disease sequelae increase with the age.
WHO recommends to vaccinate all inhabitants in those countries where TBE incidence rate is higher than 5/100.000 (ix: Baltic States, Slovenia, Czech Republic, ...) and, since it is recognized a disease in travellers, the vaccination is also recommended when travelling to endemic areas.
