According to WHO, today gastroenteritis represent a real health emergency: every year, around the world, infection caused by rotavirus (the first cause for gastroenteritis) kills about half a million deaths under the age of 5.
Approximately 80% of these deaths happens in developing countries, while in industrialized countries mortality is low. But even though the average is limited to a few cases per year, the rotavirus remains however in western countries the leading cause of hospitalization for diarrhea within 5 years of life.
